Bilingual labels for Canadian craft breweries, wineries and cideries

The 473 ml can above is already in English and French. Sign in with a free account – it comes with Plus until 31 December – and Brewlabel checks the label against CFIA’s rules, then gives you a file for the print shop or for letter paper at home.

English and French, side by side

The required text goes on in both languages the way Canadian labels have it: short words as a pair, “Strong Beer / Bière forte” and “Brewed by / Brassée par”; “6.5% alc./vol.” and “473 mL” once, as they read the same in both; and the “Contains” box with “Contains: Barley” and “Contient : Orge”, each on a line of its own. Both languages in the same size and weight. Your beer’s name, style and front stay as you wrote them, and the description can have a French version too.

What CFIA asks for

Review checks the common name by the alcohol – Light Beer, Beer, Strong Beer or Extra Strong Beer, Cider, Wine – with “% alc./vol.” and the volume in millilitres on the front, the volume’s figures at least 3.2 mm tall, the “Contains” box in black on white, the name and address, a lot code, and any date written the Canadian way: “Best before 27 JA 15 Meilleur avant”. Standardized beer and wine need no list of ingredients, and no pregnancy warning or deposit mark is printed.

Selling in Québec?

Pick Québec as where it is sold and French goes first. All the text on a label sold in Québec must be in French too, the description and the style included, and Review tells you what is still in English only. The provinces’ liquor boards – LCBO, SAQ, AGLC, NSLC – may have requirements of their own.

Barcode and a print file

Type your UPC or EAN and the barcode is drawn at a size shop scanners read. Export one label per page at its exact size, with bleed, crop marks and a cut line. You are responsible for the label as the seller – Brewlabel helps you get it right.
